The Best GM Radiator Cooling Parts
Engines put out serious heat as they run. Too much of it, and overheating happens, if not total engine failure. Coolant (antifreeze) absorbs most of it; your radiator helps dissipate it. How radiators work is a straightforward process.
First, antifreeze flows through a radiator inlet hose and a radiator outlet hose. A radiator cap pressurizes the fluid along the way. This helps it absorb as much heat as it can. Then, flat, fin-style aluminum tubes release the heat, while a fan scatters it into the air.
Some radiators have additional fins. They're called turbulators. They help disperse engine heat even further. Others have tanks mounted on their sides. They're called transmission coolers. What these do is transfer excess heat produced during transmission operation to the antifreeze instead of expelling it into the air. This helps transmissions work better.
Unfortunately, a radiator can develop problems, owing to age and use. Luckily, there are signs that it's failing or has gone bad. They include odd engine noises, the sweet, syrupy odor of ethylene glycol (indicative of an antifreeze leak), discolored, gooey, or leaking antifreeze, unusually high readings on your vehicle's temperature gauge, and car HVAC malfunctions.
